A second Golden snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus roxellana) has been born at Pairi Daiza on 20 April, just a few weeks after an already historic first birth on 17 March. Two rare births in a very short space of time.
After the arrival in May 2025 of three Golden snub-nosed monkeys (Rhinopithecus roxellana), the females Lu Lu and Juan Juan, and the male Liuyun, and their careful acclimatisation to their habitat specially designed to faithfully reproduce their natural environment, the first birth already marked a historic milestone for Europe. This second birth now confirms the solidity of the programme and the quality of the scientific and veterinary support provided.
During these crucial first moments, the mother and her young get to know each other out of sight of the visitors, in a calm, secure environment that guarantees the best possible conditions for their well-being.
The programme is based on close cooperation with the China Wildlife Conservation Association (CWCA), founded on a high level of trust, mutual respect and scientific rigour between the Chinese and Belgian teams.
Like the first birth on 17 March, this event is part of a structured breeding and awareness programme.
Very few zoological institutions worldwide currently participate in such a programme. Pairi Daiza is the only institution in Belgium to host and present this exceptional species, and is honoured to continue, alongside its Chinese partners, this shared commitment to the conservation of the most endangered species.
