It is with a heavy heart and immense sadness that we must inform you that Gempa, our beloved orangutan, whom you cherished as deeply as we did, passed away on September 24th. Gempa had been ill for several weeks. Despite all the care he received and the full dedication of our teams, it quickly became clear that his health was irreversibly deteriorating. The numerous tests performed – ultrasounds, X-rays, scans, and blood tests – along with constant consultations with external veterinarians and specialized doctors, revealed that a staphylococcal infection, despite the treatments administered, had triggered disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). This complication caused severe damage to his body: digestive bleeding, motor impairments, and organ failure, leaving no hope for recovery.
Given this tragic situation and the fact that Gempa was suffering more each day, our veterinarians, with an immensely heavy heart, made the decision to let him go peacefully.
“We truly tried everything to heal him. DIC is a serious blood disorder where the clotting mechanism spirals out of control and becomes excessive. Despite all our efforts, his condition kept deteriorating. It was heartbreaking, but we knew that the greatest act of compassion we could offer him was to help him pass away peacefully and with dignity.”
We share your sorrow over this immense loss and want to assure you that Gempa was surrounded by love and care until his last breath, both from the veterinarians and his keepers. The keepers, who have watched over him with tenderness for the past 8 years since his arrival at the park, are deeply saddened. His memory will live on through our ongoing commitment to protect and care for all the orangutans at Pairi Daiza.
The orangutan keepers are now focusing all their attention on Jula, Molly, and Sinta, who lived with Gempa. Although their health is not at risk (as this staphylococcus is not contagious), it is clear that they will need all the care and attention to cope with this loss.
We thank you once again for all the love you have shown Gempa over the years.
