The Red-river Hog

The Red-river Hog (Potamochoerus larvatus) belongs to the pig family and lives in in East and Southern Africa.

The Red-river Hog

The Red-River Hog belongs to the pig-family which is even-toed ungulates (Artiodactyla), a group that existed already 60 million years ago. This explains why pigs can be found on all continents except for Australia and Antarctica. As dawn-and night-active animals, their olfactoric sense is very well developed and helps to find mushrooms, insects and shoots hidden under soil and leaves. After 4 months of gestation the female gives birth to usually 2-4 young within a nest, constructed out of leaves and branches.
