A sublime animal in great danger

A pale white coat and blue eyes!

The “tiger” species is divided into 9 subspecies, of which 3 are already extinct (Caspian tiger, Javan tiger, and Bali tiger). The remaining 6 are all critically endangered due to hunting, poaching, and habitat loss. From 100,000 individuals in 1900, there are currently no more than 3,500 in the wild.

The Bengal tiger measures between 2.50 and 3 meters and weighs an average of 225 kg for males and 135 kg for females. It hunts deer, wild boar, and even buffaloes, mainly at dusk, in a vast territory – up to 100 km2 – of forests, savannas, and marshes.

The normal color pattern of the Bengal tiger is orange with black stripes. However, due to a genetic mutation (leucism), some very rare individuals in nature have a light broken white fur with black or brown stripes… and blue eyes! Most white tigers thus come from breeding programs in zoos where this mutation is maintained.
