The word jaguar comes from the Indigenous term yaguar, meaning “the one who kills with a single leap.” The jaguar is the third-largest big cat, after the tiger and the lion, and has the most powerful bite of all felines. Its strong jaws and teeth allow it to take down prey three to four times heavier than itself. Jaguars are solitary animals and excellent swimmers; they do not hesitate to cross streams and rivers to hunt for their prey.
