Mammal
The Fossa
The Fossa is the largest carnivorous animal in Madagascar and plays an essential role in the island’s ecological balance by regulating populations of small mammals, birds, and reptiles. However, habitat loss and hunting pose serious threats. Although it is sometimes accused of attacking poultry and livestock, such incidents are rare and often exaggerated. The combination of these pressures has led to a decline of more than 30% in the species’ population over twenty years, resulting in its classification as a “critically endangered” species.
