Grey-winged Trumpeter
"Jacamin", which means "small head"
This bird, living in the great Amazon rainforest, looks like a guineafowl but is genetically more closely related to cranes and rails. It flies rather badly and prefers to flee by running.
The Grey-Winged Trumpeter lives in little groups and nests in big trees. Oddly enough, the entire group takes part in the incubation of the clutch.
Its song is murmuring but its alarm-call is rather strong, a little like a cackle, hence its “trumpeter”.
Moreover, the Amerindians have domesticated it and appreciate it not only because it hunts snakes but also because it’s an excellent sentinel! In the language of the Tupi Indians, its name is “Jacamin”, which means “small head”.
