La Terre des Origines
The red river hog
This is also called the “Red River Hog” : it is indeed a member of the family Suidae, i.e. pigs. It has a beautiful russet-red coat and it likes water, therefore being a good swimmer.
The Red River Hog lives in the West and Central African forests and marshes, but also in Madagascar, which is odd, because it certainly didn't get there by swimming!
It sleeps during the day and is active at night, in search of its food which it locates, like many nocturnal animals, by means of its highly developed sense of smell.
With its lower canines bending upwards, in the form of a ploughshare like those of the wild boar, it unearths insects and roots but in fact it eats almost everything : mushrooms, small batrachians, leaves and fruit.
The female builds a soft nest of grass and leaves, in the shelter of the dense thicket where she gives birth to two to four piglets, which resemble wild boar piglets, with spots and stripes that they lose while growing up.
