Oasis and its animals

Previous activity Next activity

An ingenious network prevents physical exchanges with the outside world and it regulates the subtropical climatic conditions of a minimum of 7°C. Wherever you go, the vegetation is in abundance and there are numerous exotic types of animals, bamboos, lianas, banana trees, hibiscus, waterfalls, giant turtles, otters, mongooses, hornbills and beos. You will discover one surprise after another ...

Cotton-top tamarin

This little monkey with its flowing hair looks so much like a musician that it is sometimes referred to as the Liszt Monkey. The female of the species gives birth to twins two to three times a year. The father takes care of the young ones as he carries them around on his back and looks up the mother when it is time for breastfeeding. This cute monkey from Columbia is nevertheless highly endangered as the tropical rainforests are disappears at a record pace, and as highly prized laboratory animals they are also the subject of a profitable trade and as a result there are only a few thousand of still living in the wild. Also here the EEP programme is in place.

The Sloth

Layla, our sloth, was born in 2013. She is a two-toed sloth : has two hookshaped fingers and three hookshaped toes. Even though she has been spotted on the ground, Layle is the happiest when she is hanging out in the trees, high above the heads of her visitors.

A tip for those who are looking for Layla in the morning? Her bowl of fruits is served on the big rock!

Asian Otter

This dwarf otter is native to all of Asia. Like its larger European cousin, which is more threatened, these are very social animals. They communicate exuberantly through an extensive array of sounds. The families are very closely linked and their behaviour often seems somewhat human. Even though their paws are nearly claws, they can easily get fish, snails and crustaceans on dry land. Since the young ones do not instinctively know how to swim the parents experienced lifeguards.
